RESEARCH INTEREST
Our research group focuses on the study of infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on HIV infection and its associated comorbidities. Building on more than two decades of experience in HIV research, we participate in multicentre national and international cohorts and clinical trials aimed at evaluating new antiretroviral therapies including long-acting treatments, therapeutic vaccines, and strategies to improve treatment adherence and quality of life.
We are also actively involved in epidemiological and translational studies on low-level viremia, immune response, inflammation, and HIV-related comorbidities, including liver and metabolic disease. Another major area of interest is the study of viral hepatitis co-infections (HBV, HCV, and HDV), particularly the long-term impact of viral eradication on liver disease progression, regeneration, and oncological outcomes.
In parallel, the group conducts research on COVID-19, including immune response, host genetic factors, therapeutic strategies, vaccines, and prognostic determinants. Our broader research activity in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology includes infective endocarditis, mycobacterial infections, antimicrobial resistance, pharmacogenetics, and immune regulation in infectious diseases.
Finally, we are committed to the development of preventive strategies, including bacterial and viral vaccines, multidisciplinary approaches for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and infection prevention in immunocompromised patients.
