Diagnostic and therapeutic advances in affective disorders
The group is made up of professionals from different disciplines (psychiatry, psychology, neurology, biotechnology and social sciences) who work on various research projects funded through competitive public applications.
In recent years, the group has focused its lines of research on mental disorders, mainly on epidemiological, neurobiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects. Other areas of research include suicidal behaviour, well-being and population ageing within the theoretical framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).
Among the current lines of research, the following stand out:
1) Classification of mental disorders
Evaluation of the efficacy of different therapeutic strategies in patients with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorders.
Identification of inflammatory biomarkers in patients with major depressive disorder.
Needs assessment to increase participation and job performance of people with chronic illnesses (including depression).
3) Psychosis
Analysis of the role of environmental and biological factors and their interaction in the appearance of psychotic disorders, as well as their evolution over time.
Study of the molecular basis of metabolic changes associated with treatment with antipsychotics in patients with psychosis.
4) Epidemiology of mental illness
Identification of healthy ageing patterns, their determinants and critical points at which changes in trajectory occur, as well as proposal of public health interventions to optimise the ageing process.
5) Suicide
Study of the prevalence, evolutions and determinants for mental illness and suicide.
6) Welfare
Evaluation of the general state of health, functioning and well-being and their relationships with mortality and other socio-sanitary indicators.
Definition, epidemiology and factors associated with psychological well-being in the elderly.
Monitoring of repeated evaluations of the affective experience and its context in the flow of daily life.
7) Prevention and training
Prevention of mental disorders and suicide by training professionals not specialised in mental health.
Definition of improvement strategies for mental health care in developing countries.
